Exploring Riga

Wow...very cool city. After a light night \(still able to read by daylight at 11pm), and a breakfast of omelette and strong black coffee, we climbed/rode up to the top of the steeple tower of St. Peter's Lutheran Church to get a perspective of the city. The old town (built in 1300s) is not as big as it looks; many squares and a huge cafe culture. Love it that the cafes have blankets on the chairs for you to wrap in when in the shade and the cool breeze is blowing. Took a 3 hour walking tour of the Moscow district, the huge central market (built in 5 huge Zeppelin hangers) and the main Art Deco part of down town. Alex and I later toured the Art Deco museum.
Latvia only established its independence around 1918 to lose it again to the Russians/Germans/Russians in ~1941. Independent most recently since 1991, the people have a remarkable sense of self and culture despite only about 50 years total as a sovereign nation.
We have a private room with bath in the Old Town Hostel. It is clean and comfortable...with a bar with live band that played till 2am downstairs!
